Our Capabilities

Vartela runs five practices: investment management, wealth and estate planning, family governance, family office operations, and philanthropy.

How the Work Fits Together

The relationship often begins with investments, then widens into the rest as the family decides how much support it wants around the wider balance sheet.

The practices sit in different sections of the website, though the work itself overlaps. An investment decision may affect ownership structure, succession planning or reporting, so the advice is organised with that in mind from the outset.

Investment Management

Investment management sits at the centre of the mandate. Infrastructure is a major part of the portfolio, particularly energy and construction-related assets, with agriculture alongside them. The portfolio extends beyond infrastructure, with capital also allocated to global financial markets and selected growth opportunities.

Core Areas

Infrastructure & Real Assets

Infrastructure is a defining part of the mandate, mostly through direct positions and co-investments, with select fund allocations where they add access or specialist reach. Energy generation and civil or construction-related projects make up the largest share of that work, while agricultural land adds a further real asset exposure within the portfolio.

Global Financial Markets

Public equities, private equity and credit strategies sit alongside the real asset book, giving the portfolio a wider range of exposures across liquid and private markets. Manager selection and portfolio construction are reviewed with the same care given to direct investments.

Technology & Innovation

Technology and innovation sit within the growth side of the mandate, with exposure to areas such as AI and fintech, as well as selected healthcare technology. These allocations give families access to sectors that influence capital markets and private investment more broadly.

Venture Capital

Venture capital forms a distinct part of the portfolio, focused on opportunities where early-stage or growth capital fits the family's wider objectives. Position sizes remain measured relative to the broader mandate, so venture sits as part of the whole without overpowering it.

What This Covers

  • Direct and co-investment positions in energy and civil or construction-related assets
  • Agricultural land and related real asset exposure
  • Public equities, private equity and global credit strategies
  • Technology and innovation investments across AI, fintech and healthtech
  • Venture capital and selected growth opportunities
  • Manager selection, due diligence and ongoing portfolio review

Wealth & Estate Planning

This practice focuses on the structures around capital, from trusts and tax to succession planning. It comes into play where holdings span multiple entities, asset classes or jurisdictions.

For UK-based families, that often includes inheritance tax planning and the use of a family investment company as part of the wider structure. Lifetime gifting and intergenerational transfers are planned alongside that work, so the timing and ownership path make sense in the context of the family's wider affairs.

A further part of Vartela's work is risk review, especially where a concentrated position, a direct project or a piece of land needs to be accounted for before ownership changes hands. For international families, the same practice extends into tax residence and the interaction between a UK base and arrangements elsewhere.

What This Covers

  • Trust structuring and administration
  • Family investment company set-up and review
  • Inheritance tax and lifetime gifting strategy
  • Cross-border tax and residency planning
  • Insurance and risk review tied to concentrated or illiquid positions

Family Governance

Succession is approached as a gradual process. It typically involves family meetings and defined decision-making frameworks, with financial education for those stepping into greater responsibility.

The format changes with the family. One stage may call for a working session around a live decision. Another may need a broader discussion about expectations and how authority will pass over time.

This is also where readiness is assessed directly. When a next-generation family member is approaching a formal role, the process becomes more specific and more practical.

What This Covers

  • Family meeting facilitation
  • Decision-making frameworks across generations
  • Financial and investment education for the next generation
  • Succession readiness planning

Family Office Operations

This is the administrative side of the relationship: bill administration, consolidated reporting, entity support and coordination with external advisers. It keeps the moving parts of a family's affairs in order without asking the family to manage the mechanics itself.

For families with direct holdings in energy, construction or agricultural assets, the work can also extend into project oversight and the paperwork that comes with ownership. Reporting is prepared on a consistent basis across entities and advisers, so the family has one view across the full picture.

What This Covers

  • Bill pay and cash-flow management
  • Consolidated reporting across entities
  • Entity administration
  • Project oversight for direct real asset holdings
  • Advisor and insurance coordination

Philanthropy

Philanthropy is handled with the same level of care as the rest of a family's affairs, whether giving sits within the main structure or alongside it.

That may involve a foundation, a donor-advised fund, another arrangement, or a combination of the above, depending on the family's objectives. Vartela helps establish the structure and oversee how the giving develops over time.

What This Covers

  • Foundation and donor-advised fund set-up
  • Giving strategy aligned with the wider family plan
  • Grant review and ongoing oversight

Where Vartela and Families Focus Their Giving

Vartela's philanthropic work sits alongside each family's own focus. In practice, that often means supporting a small number of organisations together in areas that fit the wider mandate – sustainable energy and rural livelihoods, employment-focused social enterprises, and practical support for children and families facing hardship – so giving reflects both the family's values and Vartela's view of where capital can make a tangible difference.
